This has been a year of upheaval, change and uncertainty. There certainly is
reason to be afraid and worried about what the future will hold. At the same time, I think it is worth asking ourselves, are we truly afraid or excited?

Physiologically speaking, the body doesn’t experience a difference between fear and excitement. The vibrations in the gut and the chemicals that start racing through the body are the same whether we are afraid or excited. It is our mind and emotional state that play a large roll in determining whether we feel afraid or excited. It is why some people can be terrified of roller coasters and for others, it is a thrill.

So what are we to do at a time when the world is changing and there is a great unknown about will happen next? Are we going to be afraid and frozen in our tracks or are we going to be excited for the changes that are coming and inspired to contribute to those changes? After all, so many people have talked for a long time that changes are needed for us to live in a world that is inclusive for all and isn’t harmful to our precious ecosystem. Perhaps what we are experiencing is the beginning of the change that so many have prayed for.

If we were to view what is happening in the world right now as the beginning of that change then this is a very exciting time indeed. Sure there is some pain right now. Yet, transformative human healing is often accompanied by pain. We usually have to work through the sabotaging habits and patterns that we have developed over time before we can step into more healthy and empowering behavior. This is a painful and necessary step in the healing process.

So in one way, we can look at what is happening in the world right now and say we are moving through the old oppressive, hateful, and destructive patterns that humanity has lived by for so long. This will naturally be a painful process because there are those who want to hold on to the “old ways”. We can live in fear as we go through this process, not knowing what the world will look like in the near future or we can be excited that we are finally realizing that it is time to change these harmful patterns and make room for more loving and harmonious ways of living. Now that is something to be excited about!
